First off, I am not a doctor and I have no medical training whatsoever. I am a performer - an artist - a writer - a director - a singer - a mother - a wife - and someone, probably like you, who has struggled with unexplainable and unpredictable health issues for most of my life.

Recently, I have discovered that I have a genetic disorder which is surprising and phenomenal. If, on the off chance you have this same genetic disorder, you will want to discover it, too. I imagine if you have found this page, you may already have your suspicions.

The MTHFR Gene

The official name of this gene is “methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (NAD(P)H)” - but you can just call it the MTHFR gene. MTHFR is the gene's official symbol.

What is the normal function of the MTHFR gene?

The MTHFR gene provides instructions for making an enzyme called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. This enzyme plays a role in processing amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase is important for a chemical reaction involving forms of the B-vitamin folate (also called folic acid or vitamin B9). Specifically, this enzyme converts 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate. This reaction is required for the multistep process that converts the amino acid homocysteine to another amino acid, methionine. The body uses methionine to make proteins and other important compounds.

Can You Translate All That?

Well, that's a little scientific information about the importance of this gene. There will be much more to come as we try to understand this genetic mutation. But my primary goal in this blog is to share with you on a person to person level, the health benefits experienced by those who have tested positive for this mutation and are now taking the supplements to compensate for their inability to process these amino acids.

I am very excited about the new possibilities of living with methylated folic acid in my system, nourishing my cells. If you are experiencing improved health as well, let's talk about it and encourage others to be tested. It is estimated that 30% of people in the U.S. have this genetic mutation. The fact that drastically improved health can happen by taking an over-the-counter supplement is exciting. For me - it's a miracle!
